Reservation
Should you have mobility impairments, it’s important to book your tour ahead of time at the Hohenschwangau Ticket-Center. This ensures we have ample time to organize necessary arrangements (such as providing support staff and coordinating tour schedules). When booking, please specify the number of visitors, the preferred language for the tour, and your desired start time.
Individuals with disabilities are eligible for discounted admission fees upon presentation of valid proof; if a companion is required, as noted in the documentation, they are welcomed free of charge.
Ticket Collection: Reserved tickets need to be picked up no later than one hour before the scheduled admission time from the ‘reserved tickets’ desk at the Hohenschwangau Ticket Center.
Access to the Castle: Unfortunately, driving directly to the castle, even for visitors with mobility issues, is not permitted. There are three accessible parking spots available in the P2 car park in Hohenschwangau (parking fees apply).
The route from the Ticket Center to Neuschwanstein Castle is paved but climbs uphill over approximately 1.5 km, with some steep inclines.
Horse-Drawn Carriage: For ease, we suggest using the horse-drawn carriage service, where drivers are ready to assist with boarding. Foldable wheelchairs can be accommodated, but electric wheelchairs cannot be transported. The carriage journey concludes at a drop-off point below the castle, leaving a 450-meter ascent on an asphalt road with up to a 15% grade.
Bus: A low-floor bus transports visitors to the ‘Jugend’ stop above the castle. From there, a paved path approximately 500 meters in length and 2.5-3 meters wide leads downhill to the castle, featuring gradients of 12-19% and a slight camber, without rest stops and with railings for security.
Visitors must assess whether the path suits their abilities; the property owner disclaims liability for accidents.
Disabled Vehicle Service by the Bavarian Red Cross: We can recommend a service for transport directly to the castle entrance, available for safety reasons only on Tuesdays and Thursdays between 10 am and 12 noon. For details, contact the Neuschwanstein Castle Administration Office.
Inside the Castle: Upon arrival, castle staff will meet you at the designated visitor exit and guide you to the tour. After the tour, they will escort you back.
An elevator in the castle accommodates visitors using wheelchairs or with mobility restrictions (advance notice required). Lift dimensions: door width 0.85 m, depth 1.30 m. Please ensure your wheelchair fits these dimensions.
Due to safety regulations, only one wheelchair or walker user per hour is permitted on guided tours.
Accessible restrooms are located on level 2 in the café area and at the kiosk across from Zimmermannplatz.
Please note that wheelchairs or walkers are not available for rent within the castle.
Evacuation Procedures (e.g., Fire Alarm): In the event of an evacuation, the castle’s elevator will be out of service. For visitors with limited mobility who are unable to use the stairs unaided, the castle is equipped with two evacuation chairs. A castle staff member will assist each person with mobility impairments to exit the premises safely using these chairs, via the designated marble staircase and subsequent exit tunnel.
